Diazepam (Easium) 10 mg: Uses, Dosage & Safety Information
Description
Easium 10 mg contains diazepam, a prescription-only benzodiazepine used for the short-term treatment of anxiety, agitation, and fear-related conditions. It is also prescribed for alcohol withdrawal symptoms, seizure disorders (including febrile seizures), and muscle relaxation.
In clinical settings, diazepam may be used for preoperative sedation and short-term management of insomnia. Long-term use is discouraged due to the risk of dependence.
How It Works
Diazepam enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that suppresses excessive nerve activity in the brain. This leads to reduced anxiety, decreased muscle tension, and improved seizure control.
The medication provides calming, muscle-relaxing, and anticonvulsant effects within the central nervous system.
Dosage
Dosage is based on the patient’s condition, age, and medical history. Adults are typically prescribed 2 mg to 10 mg, taken one to four times daily, as directed by a healthcare professional.
Exceeding the prescribed dose increases the risk of adverse effects, tolerance, and dependence.
Special Considerations
Easium may impair alertness, coordination, and concentration. Alcohol and other sedative medicines must not be taken alongside diazepam.
Extra caution and monitoring are required for elderly patients and those with liver, kidney, or respiratory conditions.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Diazepam use during pregnancy is not recommended, particularly during the first and third trimesters, due to risks of fetal complications, neonatal withdrawal, or breathing difficulties.
As diazepam passes into breast milk, breastfeeding should be avoided unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Drowsiness and fatigue
- Dizziness
- Muscle weakness
Rare but serious effects include confusion, memory impairment, mood changes, and breathing difficulties. Abrupt discontinuation after long-term use may cause withdrawal symptoms.
Overdose Warning
Overdose symptoms may include extreme sedation, confusion, loss of consciousness, or coma. The risk is significantly increased when diazepam is combined with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives.
Immediate emergency medical attention is required if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Easium at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep securely out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of expired medication safely and responsibly.
